It will fold like a butterfly knife in a wreck, but it would do that anyway. For normal usage, the Astro’s front subframe is kind of like that under a Nova or F-body, and the rear compartment has integrated sheet metal frame rails under the floor, so it’s no worse than a Corvair pickup.

Actually, if Chevy hadn’t been making the S10, they should have been making this.

Unfortunate that the factory dutch doors don’t lend themselves to this that well. The best outcome might still have been to try to find a dutch door upper hatch...

As I think you can see, he would have had to make a ~3" cove for the top of the doors to use the dutch doors themselves because the dutch doors’ tops are lower than the hinges (!), but that wouldn’t have been an insurmountable problem. Not at all.

However, you go to ute with the Astro you have.
